Budget 2016–2017 Highlights: Provision for sound management of hazardous waste
Several measures have been announced in the 2016-2017 Budget regarding sound waste management and particularly hazardous waste.
A new system will be introduced for the collection, disposal and recycling of some 8,000 tonnes of electronic and electrical wastes. In that respect, the appropriate legislation will be made for the introduction of an Advance Recycling Fee at the importation of electronic goods to be listed in a Schedule. In addition, a centralised Hazardous Waste Facility will be created at La Chaumière.
Moreover, an Expression of Interest will be floated to invite potential operators to set up a system for recycling of waste tyres.
In a bid to encourage households and small planters to produce their own compost, compost bins and mixing tools will be provided to 7,000 households and 3,000 small planters.
